(BANG! – July 2016)
The pinecone in the tree exploded into a shower of delightfully-scented confetti. Lyra whooped with glee at the sheer destructive force she held in her hands, a force created not of her own will but rather of the world. Grinning excitedly, she clicked another round into place and took aim at the empty bottle propped atop a nearby stump.
The bottle too exploded, sending glittering shards high into the air. Lyra cheered once more as she mused on the weapon she held. Firing the revolver gripped firmly in her hands felt like grasping the wrong end of a horse and throwing it at her target, like getting a kick square in the wrists. She shrugged, then set her sights on a third target, a small placard tacked to a tree a dozen yards away. Sound fell away and the world narrowed to pinpoint focus as she drew on her years of training with bow and arrow to align the sights with the center of the placard.
A neat hole appeared in the precise center of the sheet of paper. She smiled, satisfied with her growing prowess, as she gathered the spent casings and checked the cylinder before tucking the revolver back into its hiding spot. Her noisy little friend would remain her secret... for now.
