Welcome to Dark Prospects. While we highly recommend reading the Dark Prospects Rulebook, we understand that the full rulebook can be a bit daunting at times. It's over 100 pages and some of it is a little tightly packed. I'm going to try to draw out the character creation rules to the best of my ability on this page, so you can quickly get your first character built. The rulebook really is necessary to fully get the game nailed down. There are a few links that you might find really useful in building your character.

The Character Builder (character sheet system and character management tool)
Importantly, you can build a character with the builder tool virtually without touching the rulebook. It handles your points costs and has the powers listed in the dropdown fields on the builder. You can see the dropdowns on the character builder to learn all kinds of things about the characters you can play too.
The main rulebook
This contains all of the rules you'll need to build your character and play the game. When browsing the rulebook keep the section on Power Descriptor Lines (or PDLs) in mind.
The character questionnaire
As part of building your character, you should contact the character guides to discuss your character history and ensure your character concept will fit into the world of Dark Prospects.

Keep in mind while building your character you should consider your character backstory in preparation for the Character Guiding process. Consider why a character has a certain skill, where they picked it up, and how it impacted their growth even before their first game. In general, build your backstory and your character so that they work well together.

So, what can you play?

Mortal: Vanilla, Faithful, Hedge Mage, Psychic, Ghoul, Kinfolk
Vampire: Brujah, Gangrel, Lasombra, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Tzimisce, Ventrue, Assamite, Daughters of Cacophony, Giovanni, Ravnos, Salubri, Samedi, Setite, Caitiff (clanless), Gargoyle
Wraith
Werewolf: Black Fury, Bone Gnawer, Child of Gaia, Fianna, Get of Fenris, Iron Rider, Shadow Lord, Silent Strider, Silver Fang, Stargazer, Uktena, Wendigo
Fera:
Bastet: Bagheera, Balam, Bubasti, Khan, Pumonca, Qualmi, Simba, Swara
Corax
Gurahl: Forest Walkers, Ice Stalkers, Mountain Guardians, River Keepers
Nuwisha
Ratkin: Tunnel Runner, Shadow Seer, Knife Skulker, Warrior, Engineer, Plague Lord, Munchmausen, Twitcher
Gaian Spirit

A number of these are restricted, so don't forget to check the Character Builder or Rulebook to see if the character you want to play has a restricted cost associated. You can also use this link, which will take you directly to the restricted cost list for the current game: https://darkprospects.endogaming.net/Characters/builder/?act=restricted

Once you've selected your character type, load them up in the Character Builder. Use the dropdowns to select the character vitals - the top lines on the left hand page. This should allow you to load the basic template for your character type. You may need to quickly check the rulebook chapter for your character type to determine how to select your starting power trees. The section you're looking for is labeled "Creating a <insert character type here>" - it should describe how to select your power trees. At the top of the Character Builder page you should see the list of XP your starting character has available and how to spend it.

The dropdowns in the power sections of the rulebook on the Tree selection lines let you choose a tree by name, as well as what type of tree it is (Innate, Non-Innate, Technique, Skill, etc... By default, the left page handles your Innate and Non-Innate powers, while the right page handles your Techniques and Skills. For more information on Techniques and SKills, please read the rulebook. Spend the XP available on the sheet in the associated categories: Backgrounds, Powers, Abilities/Skills, Energy, Willpower, Freebie Points, Merits and Flaws. Freebie points can be spent anywhere XP could be spent on your sheet, including in Restricted costs.
